Ducks Hold On For 4-3 Win Over Dawgs

EUGENE, Ore.  – Gabe Matthews drove in three runs for Oregon to help the host Ducks (14-5, 3-1 Pac-12) overcome four errors and beat the visiting Huskies, 4-3, in game one of the teams' three-game series Friday night at PK Park.

Oregon starter David Peterson (5-1) came into the night carrying a scoreless-streak that had spanned 22 1/3 innings, but the Huskies (13-8, 3-1) were able to get to the junior lefty in the first inning for a run to snap the streak. Jack Meggs reached on an infield single to third, advanced all the way to third on an errant pick-off attempt by Peterson and came around to score on a MJ Hubbs sacrifice fly.

The lead was short-lived though, as the Ducks responded with a pair of runs off UW starter Jordan Jones (2-4) in the first to take a 2-1 lead. Kyle Kasser reached on what was ruled an infield single to first base and came around to score when No. 2 hitter Morgan McCullough found a gap for a triple. One out later, the designated hitter Matthews drove McCullough home on a ground-rule double to right field.

UW re-took the lead in the fourth, thanks largely to third baseman Willie MacIver. Joey Morgan struck out to start the inning but he reached first on a passed ball charged to Ducks' catcher Tim Susnara. MacIver took advantage of the mistake and tied the score by tripling to right field. The Huskies' sophomore third baseman would come around to score and make it 3-2 on a sacrifice fly hit by designated hitter Nick Kahle.

That would be all the scoring for the Huskies on a rainy night in Eugene and the Ducks re-took the lead in the fifth when Matthews doubled for the second time in the game, scoring two runs and giving Oregon a 4-3 advantage.

Jones lasted one more inning for the Huskies before he exited the game. The freshman allowed six hits, two walks, two hit batters and struck out one. He did a nice job of using the Ducks' expansive ballpark to his advantage, recording 13 fly ball outs on the evening, but he was saddled with the loss.

Peterson, meanwhile was solid over seven innings, allowing six hits, just one earned one, striking out seven and walking none. He improved to 5-1 on the season.

Both teams handed the game over to their bullpens and both kept the score right where it was. Ducks' closer Kenyon Yovan pitched the final two innings, including a 1-2-3 ninth, to pick up his seventh save of the season.

Hubbs and Meggs each had two of Washington's seven hits on the night.

The Huskies and Ducks will play game two Saturday at 7 p.m., which will be carried live on the Pac-12 Network.
