Husky rowing fans will have numerous opportunities to watch Washington rowers in action next week as 25 UW men and women will compete at the 2019 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Sarasota, Fla.

The regatta, held at Nathan Benderson Park (home of the 2018 NCAA Championships), will stream live on ESPN3 (online and via the ESPN app) and runs from Wednesday, July 24, through Sunday, July 28.

The UW will be represented by nine women and 16 men, ranging from 2019 graduates to incoming freshmen. Huskies will compete in five women's and three men's race categories, representing eight different nations.

While most of the Husky participants are competing in U-23s for the first time, several were at last year's championships in Poland.

Dimitra Tsamopoulou, who will row for Greece in the double sculls this year, finished eighth overall in the straight four in 2018. She also won bronze in the double in 2017. Her classmate, Holly Dunford, rowed in the Great Britain eight last season, finishing fourth, and is back in that crew again this week.

On the men's side, Chris Carlson, Andrew Gaard, Samuel Halbert and Madison Molitor were all in the United States men's eight that won the gold medal at Under 23 Championships last year. Those four are all back in 2019, with UW head coach Michael Callahan coaching that boat for the second year in a row. Carlson was in the Under-23 men's eight in 2017.

Two more American men – graduated seniors Evan Olson and Elijah Maesmer – will row in the coxed four this week. Olson rowed in the U.S. M4+ that won bronze two years ago in 2017, while Maesner was in the coxless four last summer. They'll be coached by UW assistant Sergio Espinoza, who led the men's coxed four to the gold medal last summer in Poland.

Three other UW men with U-23 experience will row in the men's eight: Gert-Jan van Doorn (Netherlands), Harvey Kay (Great Britain) and Nick Everett (Canada). All three rowed last sumer in Poland.

Also competing in the men's coxed four are Germans Alexander Vollmer and Nil Vorberg. Vollmer rowed in the German men's pair in the 2017 Under-23s, while Vorberg was in the pair last year.
